Skimming is an illegal activity that involves the installation of a device on the ATM. The devices planted on ATMs are usually undetectable by users-the makers of this equipment have become very adept at creating them, often from plastic or plaster, so that they blend right into the ATM’s facade. Customers insert their ATM card into the phony reader, and their account info is swiped and stored on a small attached laptop or cell phone or sent wirelessly to the criminals waiting nearby.
- Memorize your Personal Identification Number (PIN). Never write it on your card.
- Never discuss your account balance with anyone, or give information about your account or PIN over the phone.
- Never allow anyone to use your card or PIN.
- Don’t withdraw money for any “official” person. No credit union representative, auditor or police officer will ever ask you to withdraw money from an ATM for any reason.
- Keep your receipts and verify each transaction against your statement. Notify us immediately of any unexplained ATM or debit card transactions.
- Have someone come with you when using an ATM at night. Choose a well lit ATM and park close.
- If someone is using the ATM, stand back to allow for privacy.
- Fill out all forms beforehand and have your card ready when you approach the ATM.
- Stand directly in front of the ATM or POS terminal so no one sees you enter your PIN.
- If anything or anyone seems suspicious while using the ATM, cancel your transaction and return later.
- Leave the area before counting your money. If followed after leaving the ATM, go to a crowded public area.
- Keep your card in a safe place; never leave it in your car, luggage or hotel room.
New credit card scams have surfaced recently that target credit card customers by phone and email. One involves fraudsters posing as Mastercard or Visa Security Fraud Department employees. The fraudster asks a series of questions to extract personal cardholder information, such as the three–digit card validation code imprinted on your card’s rear signature panel.
In some cases, the caller has already secured some account data, such as the cardholder’s name, number and card expiration date, and is seeking enough additional information to make fraudulent purchases on the Internet.
To prevent credit card fraud, never disclose any account information to someone you do not know–not over the phone, not by email. Prevention is the key to safety. Monitor the transactions on your credit card statements carefully and contact the credit card company immediately if you notice anything suspicious.
